WASHINGTON, DC — In response to a recent report finding several instances in which DC Councilmember Jack Evans violated the council’s ethics rules, DC Democratic Party Chair Charles Wilson issued the following statement:
“The DC Democratic Party is aware of a recent report finding several instances of ethics violations by Councilmember Jack Evans. We are further aware that Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s ethics committee concluded Councilmember Evans violated their code of conduct by failing to disclose conflicts of interest. We also acknowledge there is another ongoing investigation into Councilmember Evans’s conduct.
“I am deeply disappointed in Councilmember Evans and his actions. In light of these accusations, I’ve asked Jack to take a step back and consider whether these continued distractions are beneficial to our organization. Though I acknowledge these allegations are not directly related to his role as National Committeeman for the DC Democratic Party, I expect all members of our Party to maintain the highest level of integrity in their activities and leadership positions both within the Party and in the community.
“These allegations have led us to look inward and examine our internal policies and procedures. We are currently finalizing a new code of conduct to set a standard of ethics and accountability for all committee members. We are also in the process of updating our bylaws to allow for more responsive action to conduct violations by our members in the future.
“As we move forward, the DC Democrats remain focused on engaging voters in the democratic process and creating opportunities to speak on the issues that matter most to Democrats in Washington, DC. On a larger scale, we are working with our partners across the country to make DC Statehood a national issue and to gain a Democratic majority in states across the nation.”
